Beat the Street is returning to Barnsley from Thursday, 10th June to Thursday, 22nd July
Beat the Street is returning to Barnsley this summer!
The popular physical activity game, commissioned by Barnsley Council, took the town by storm in the summer of 2019.
More than 25,000 local residents of all ages walked, ran, cycled, scooted and wheeled 144,810 miles during the six-week game to win points and prizes.
This year Beat the Street will take place from Thursday 10 June to Thursday 22 July and organisers hope the game will be even bigger and better.
Many players in Barnsley said that the previous Beat the Street game had helped encourage them to walk or scoot more often, visit new places and spend more time with their friends and family.
Feedback included comments such as: “It made me go out on my scooter more and helped me to read a map! I enjoyed the fresh air more and I noticed things that I never knew were there like allotments and animals. Just loved Beat the Street and I hope it comes back next year. I also enjoyed walking and scooting around different other villages”. Another resident said: “It helped me find new places and have fun while exercising. It also helped to meet new people and chat about the game while out and about.”
Half of the funding for Beat the Street Barnsley is provided by Barnsley Council, with Sport England funding the other half.
Cllr Jim Andrews, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health, said: “It’s a real pleasure to announce that we are commissioning Beat the Street for another year in Barnsley. After the game finished in 2019, we had lots of families getting in touch asking for it to come to Barnsley again, and we’re happy to do just that this year.
“We know that one of the best things people can do right now for their physical and mental health is to move more and to get out into green space where possible, and Beat the Street really helps people do that safely.
“It’s free to take part in Beat the Street and it’s open to everyone regardless of age, ability or background. It’s so important to encourage people to get active, but we really want to highlight our focus on safety which is our top priority.”
