In partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, we created a workplace health scheme.

The scheme, called Physical Activity Loyalty (PAL) Card Scheme, encouraged workers at Stormont to go walking and running in the grounds during their work breaks.

Intelligent Health provided guidance and the technology to deliver this three-month randomised controlled trial organised by the Centre of Excellence in Public Health at Queen’s University.

The aim of this study was to investigate the best methods of encouraging people to undertake more physical activity. We placed sensors around the Stormont Estate, which monitored the amount of physical activity Civil Servants were doing. By swiping their RFID card (the loyalty card) across the sensors they could keep track of daily physical activity levels, which were automatically uploaded onto their web page, and sent via a regular text message to their mobile phone.

The trial is being prepared for publication after a six-month follow up questionnaire has been completed.
