Peer reviewed research shows Beat the Street can have a powerful impact on commuter patterns. In the London Borough of Hounslow, 1199 fewer cars (a 53% reduction) and 130 fewer vans (also a 53% reduction) travelled along a congested road between 07:00-09:30 in the week following Beat the Street (when compared with the week before the game stated). There were also 705 fewer cars (a 34% reduction) and 36 fewer vans (a 20% reduction) travelling along the road between 14:00-16:30. This suggests that turning a whole area of a town or city into an interactive game is a promising approach to nudge people into travelling by foot, bicycle or wheelchair that continues once the game has ended.
